CARE / SUPPORT WORKER - JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Care Worker

Hours of duty: Flexible

Responsible to: Team Manager / Service Manager

 

At George Springall Homecare Partnership our aim is to enhance the lives of vulnerable people and assist them to achieve and maintain independence within their own home.

 

Job summary

 

Our support and Care Workers will be providing personal, practical and/or social support to older people and adults with one or more support needs.

 

Our Care Workers will be assisting our clients with the following activities (not exhaustive):

 

Household tasks - cleaning, plant care and gardening

Managing personal laundry and ironing

Shopping, menu planning, preparing and cooking meals, diet monitoring

Eating and drinking

Bathing and other personal care tasks, dressing or undressing

Getting in or out of bed or other moving about

Administrating medication and the collection of medications

Supporting clients to attend medical appointments

Reading books or newspapers, writing and dealing with correspondence

Keeping in contact with the client's family and friends

Walking and exercise, pet care

Companionship and conversation

Accompanying clients to social events and religious services

Supporting with days out or for short breaks.

Sleep overs with agreement

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Communication

 

Communicate effectively with clients, recognizing the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, cultural background and preferred ways of communicating.

Communicate and give information in ways that the client can understand.

Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication.

Listen to the client and pass on their wishes to the support team.

Ensure effective communication between colleagues, other professionals, client's friends, family or other people associated with the client.

Delivering a high quality service

Demonstrate a client-centred approach.

Treat individuals with dignity and respect.

Support the client with any personal care and health needs in a way that is sensitive, respectful and has been agreed with the client in accordance with the care plan.

Recognize and work within own competence.

Prioritize, organize and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality.

Ensure the client's safety and that of others and self.

Adhere to the reporting of incidents and accidents in accordance with George Springall Homecare Partnership Care policies.

Understand and apply legal policy that supports the identification of vulnerable and abused adults, being aware of statutory vulnerable adult health procedure and local guidance.

Evaluating the quality of one's own work and that of the team, implementing improvements where required.

Participate in shared learning across the company.

Comply with health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines, and any control measures in place.

Apply infection-control and food hygiene measures within the home environment.

Undertake risk assessments as needed under the supervision of your manager.

 

Utilising information

 

Use technology and appropriate software packages as an aid to the presenting and communicating of information relating to the planning, implementation and monitoring of care.

Understand the responsibility of self and others regarding the Freedom of Information Act, and the importance of confidentiality.

 

Learning and development

 

Identify your own learning needs and undertake training as appropriate.

Disseminate learning and information to other team members in order to share good practice and inform others about current and future developments (e.g. courses and conferences).

Assist with the inducting, coaching and mentoring of new staff.

 

Person Specification

 

Knowledge

 

Essential - Awareness of accountability of own and other's roles in a care agency.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

Ability to read, write and speak English in order to communicate clearly with our clients.

Willingness to undertake all essential training and training relevant to role when required.

Ability to travel to and work in a variety of different locations.

Ability to work alone in individual's home.

Ability and/or willingness to use a computer.

Ability to work shifts of differing lengths.

 

Desirable

GCSE or equivalent English language. Other languages.

Experience of working with older people and/or vulnerable adults.
